Polyphenolic Compounds in Combatting MDR Pathogens: Current Research and Future Directions

The relentless progression of multi-drug resistance (MDR) among microbial pathogens poses significant challenges to current therapeutic strategies across the globe. In the fight against MDR infections, traditional antimicrobials frequently fall short due to evolved resistance mechanisms. These adaptations span physiological changes and genetic mutations in bacteria, fungi, and parasites, leading to a reduced efficacy of conventional drugs. Emerging studies suggest that natural polyphenols hold substantial promise in addressing this resistance, yet their potential therapeutic impacts and underlying mechanisms against MDR organisms have not been fully dissected. The growing importance of these studies is underscored by increasing MDR-related complications, which threaten to undermine decades of medical advances.

This Research Topic aims to explore and elucidate the mechanisms of action and effectiveness of polyphenol-enriched formulations specifically designed to counteract MDR microbial infections. The objective is to advance the understanding of how these natural compounds interact with resistant pathogens and to evaluate their therapeutic potential as an alternative to traditional antimicrobial agents.

The focus of this Research Topic is confined to in vitro and in vivo studies examining the efficacy of natural polyphenol-rich compounds in treating MDR infections. We welcome articles that will contribute rigorous research on:

• The antimicrobial properties of polyphenolic compounds against drug-resistant pathogens.
• Mechanistic studies detailing how polyphenols act at molecular levels to combat MDR.
• Comparative effectiveness of polyphenol-enriched treatments versus standard antimicrobials.

To further enhance our understanding of natural polyphenols as viable antimicrobial agents, we welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to, these specific themes:

• Safety and efficacy of polyphenol treatments.
• Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of polyphenol compounds in MDR contexts.
• Innovative strategies enhancing the bioavailability and potency of polyphenols.

Contributions should focus on the aforementioned aspects while avoiding topics outside the set boundaries such as the synthesis of metal nanoparticles or herbal extracts with non-specific biological applications.
