Adolescence is a critical period marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes, which can render young individuals vulnerable to emotional disorders. The incidence of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders peaks during these formative years, with suicide and self-harm emerging as significant concerns. The urgency to understand and address these issues is underscored by the World Health Organization's recognition of suicide as a leading cause of death among adolescents. This special issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research that enhances our understanding of adolescent emotional disorders and suicide/self-harm, offering insights into effective intervention strategies.
This Research Topic is dedicated to publishing high-quality, interdisciplinary research articles that contribute to the understanding and management of emotional disorders and suicide self-harm in adolescents. We welcome empirical studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and theoretical papers that explore the etiology, risk factors, protective factors, and intervention strategies related to these critical issues. Articles that employ innovative methodologies or address gaps in the existing literature are particularly encouraged.
We welcome the research related to the following themes, including, but not limited to:
1. Epidemiology and Risk Factors: Studies examining the prevalence and incidence of emotional disorders and suicide self-harm, as well as the identification of risk factors.
2. Protective Factors and Resilience: Research on factors that protect against or buffer the impact of emotional disorders and suicide self-harm.
3. Intervention Strategies: Evaluations of therapeutic interventions, school-based programs, and community initiatives aimed at preventing and treating emotional disorders and suicide self-harm.
4. Cultural and Socioeconomic Influences: Exploration of how cultural and socioeconomic factors influence the development and outcome of emotional disorders and suicide self-harm.
5. Neurobiology and Psychophysiology: Studies investigating the biological underpinnings of emotional disorders and the neural correlates of suicide self-harm.
