Background

The relentless rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels necessitates innovative solutions for sustainable CO2 management, pivotal to mitigating climate change impacts. A variety of technologies have emerged, enabling the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels. Among these, techniques such as thermal catalytic, photochemical, electrochemical, and plasma-induced processes offer promising pathways. Alongside, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) strategies are being developed to bolster these efforts. Despite these technological advances, challenges persist in their integration, efficiency, and the supportive regulatory environment needed for broad implementation.

This Research Topic aims to deepen the understanding and refine the methodologies behind CO2 conversion technologies. It is centered on addressing critical challenges such as enhancing efficiency, selectivity, and scalability of these technologies. There’s a particular focus on the exploration of new catalysts, the optimization of reaction conditions, and the effective integration of CO2 capture with utilization systems. Moreover, this Research Topic seeks to uncover how policies and strategies can accelerate the commercial adoption and deployment of these solutions, thereby supporting the foundation of a circular carbon economy.

To gather further insights in this crucial field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Novel catalysts and reaction mechanisms for CO2 conversion technologies;
• Optimization strategies for CO2 conversion processes across different technologies;
• Integration of CO2 capture and utilization systems with existing industrial frameworks;
• Impact of regulatory frameworks and policies on the commercialization of CO2 conversion technologies;
• Case studies and roadmaps for achieving scalability in CO2 conversion techniques.
