About this Research Topic

Background

Microbial communities play a pivotal role in health and disease, influencing antibiotic resistance and immune responses in host organisms. The complex interplay between microbiota, antibiotic resistance, and host-pathogen interactions is crucial in understanding infectious disease dynamics. The rising global health challenges posed by infectious diseases and increasing antibiotic resistance are exacerbated by limited insights into how microbiota influence pathogen behavior, resistance, and disease outcomes. Current research often lacks comprehensive models that integrate microbiota, pathogens, and host factors, hindering the development of effective strategies to combat these issues.

This research topic focuses on the interplay between microbiota, antibiotic resistance, and host-microbe interactions in infectious diseases. We welcome studies using omics approaches and experimental models to characterize microbiota-pathogen interactions, identifying genetic and biochemical pathways of antibiotic resistance and the role of microbiota, and examining how microbiota and pathogens interact with the host’s immune system to influence disease. Additionally, research that focus on developing novel interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, and new antimicrobial strategies, along with personalized treatments are encouraged.

Contributors are welcome to submit Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Methods, Perspective Articles, and Opinion Articles that provide new insights on, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Gut, oral, and skin microbiota interactions in health and disease.
- The role of microbiota in modulating antibiotic resistance and immune response.
- Innovative microbiota-targeted therapies.
- Impact of host-microbe interactions on infection outcomes.
- Genetic, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and phenotypic analyses of pathogenic resistance mechanisms.

Expected outcomes include enhanced understanding of microbiota's role in resistance and disease management, novel prevention and treatment strategies, and advancement of precision medicine based on host-microbe interactions.
