Background

Organized in conjunction with World No-Tobacco Day on May 31st, this Research Topic focuses on the significant threat that tobacco exposure poses to infant and child health, particularly affecting neonatal development and pediatric respiratory outcomes. Tobacco remains a major, preventable risk factor worldwide, affecting infants through maternal smoking during pregnancy, secondhand smoke exposure at home, and other indirect environmental contacts. These exposures can interrupt essential developmental processes, leading to complications such as low birth weight, preterm birth, respiratory issues, and long-term chronic health challenges. Despite existing research, translating this knowledge into practical, policies and interventions has been suboptimal.

This Research Topic aims to explore the pathophysiological pathways linking tobacco exposure to disruptions in neonatal and pediatric health, with a focus on the mechanisms and outcomes of early-life exposure on lung and overall child development. It seeks to highlight clinical case studies to showcase the range of health challenges associated with tobacco. Evaluating innovative interventions for prevention and management in neonatal and child healthcare settings is central to bridging current gaps. The topic also examines the psychosocial and family dynamics in households affected by tobacco and assesses strategies at the community, policy, and public health levels that connect neonatology, pediatric pulmonology, and child health for effective prevention and advocacy.

To gather further insights in safeguarding neonatal, pulmonary, and child health from tobacco exposure, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Pathophysiological mechanisms of tobacco impact on neonatal and child health
• Spectrum of clinical presentations related to tobacco exposure
• Innovative prevention and intervention strategies
• Psychosocial impacts and family dynamics in affected households
• Community, policy, and public health approaches in tobacco exposure mitigation

We welcome original research, clinical and laboratory studies, case reports, reviews, and mini-reviews from fields such as neonatology, pediatric pulmonology, and child health. Submissions focusing on translational science, multidisciplinary care, and policies targeting the health of children impacted by tobacco are strongly encouraged.
