Aquaculture plays a pivotal role in securing global food supplies by providing humans with high-quality proteins from aquatic animals. However, the industry is critically threatened by bacterial diseases that lead to high mortality rates. Additionally, the misuse of antibiotics in aquaculture has resulted in the rise of antibiotic resistance and heightened food safety concerns. These challenges underscore the necessity for developing novel strategies and antibiotic alternatives to ensure sustainable and high-quality growth within the aquaculture sector.
This Research Topic focuses on exploring and understanding cutting-edge technologies and methods designed to prevent and control bacterial infections within aquaculture environments. Our main objective is to provide fresh perspectives and solutions that contribute to the healthy and sustainable advancement of aquaculture. Critical areas of focus include the study of innovative technologies such as natural compounds, phages, and antimicrobial peptides, as well as investigations into antimicrobial resistance, all aiming to address the pressing challenges currently facing the industry.
The scope of this Research Topic is defined by the exploration and presentation of novel methods and alternatives to traditional antibiotic use in battling bacterial diseases in aquaculture. We encourage articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:
- Application of natural compounds for disease prevention - Utilization of bacteriophages as alternatives to antibiotics - Development of antimicrobial peptides targeting specific pathogens - Strategies for managing and mitigating antimicrobial resistance
We welcome submission of various article types on this Research Topic, including original research articles, reviews, and case studies.
