Background

Hypertension continues to present as a significant global health challenge, contributing notably to cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality rates, as well as to the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Increasing recognition of gender differences in pharmacological responses has highlighted the urgent need to better understand renal pharmacology in hypertensive women. Historically, medical research has prioritized male subjects, resulting in a knowledge gap in understanding women's responses to antihypertensive treatments. Gender-specific physiological changes, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can impact both renal function and blood pressure regulation, underscoring the need for tailored therapeutic approaches for women.

This Research Topic aims to address these disparities by exploring the facets of renal pharmacology unique to women, particularly regarding hypertension management. By investigating differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, we aim to identify gender-specific therapeutic responses that optimize treatment efficacy and safety among women with hypertension. The kidneys' pivotal role in blood pressure regulation through mechanisms like fluid balance and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is gaining attention for its variation across genders.
