Soil and water pollution, especially the pollution of emerging contaminants, heavy metals, and organic pollutants, has become one of the serious global environmental problems, directly endangering the foundation and environment of human survival. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and deploy innovative and specific improvement strategies to efficiently restore the ecological functions of soil or water. Among them, the coupling system of microorganisms and ecological materials, such as carbon-based materials-electricity producing microorganisms, phosphorus-based materials-phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms, semiconductor materials-photocatalytic microorganisms, etc., has played a significant role in soil and water ecological function restoration, and is also a research hotspot worthy of attention.
This Research Topic aims to provide an open sharing platform for innovative achievements in fields such as biotechnology, microbial remediation, microbial interactions, coupling mechanisms between microorganisms and ecological materials, and Environmental pollution control and remediation.
We are pleased to invite researchers to contribute new insights into this Research Topic. In this Research Topic, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
(1) New remediation methods, especially the combination of functional materials and biological methods (2) Microbial-material coupling remediation of Emerging Contaminants, Heavy Metals, and Organic pollutants (3) Enhancement mechanism of microorganisms in the process of joint pollution remediation (4) Dynamics and diversity of microbial communities in pollution remediation using materials (need for experimental validation of hypotheses formed by dynamics and diversity results) (5) Interaction mechanism between the material and microbial interface
Please note that Frontiers in Microbiology does not consider descriptive studies of microbial communities solely based on amplicon sequencing profiles (e.g., 16S rRNA and ITS) unless an explicit hypothesis and experimentation are made and provide insight into the microbial process and strategy being studied.
