About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is closed for submissions.

Background

This Research Topic is an expanded second volume of our collection on “Perinatal Mental Health in the Post-COVID Era: Impacts and Future Strategies” here, focusing on the ongoing lessons on women’s mental health in the post-COVID era. We aim to inform best practices and share a more equitable and resilient future for women and families.

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted women’s mental health, with perinatal populations facing some of the greatest challenges. Pandemic-related stressors—including isolation, disrupted access to care, anxiety, economic insecurity, safety concerns and increased domestic pressures—have disproportionately affected women and mothers.

As the world continues to transition into post-COVID era, understanding and addressing the lingering mental health effects among women has become increasingly urgent.

While research has begun to uncover the complex ways that pandemic conditions have shaped women’s mental health, crucial gaps persist—particularly regarding long-term outcomes, effective interventions, and inequalities faced by women in diverse settings. As health systems and communities recover and adapt, it is essential to prioritize women’s psychological wellbeing and resilience in both policy and clinical practice.

This Research Topic calls for contributions that advance knowledge on women’s mental health in the aftermath of COVID-19.  Submissions may explore both immediate and long-term psychological impacts, as well as strategies to support women’s mental health in the new global landscape.

We welcome submissions on topics including, but not limited to:
- Long-term mental health sequelae of COVID-19 among women and mothers.
- Post-pandemic implications of long COVID for perinatal mental health.
- Studies of recovery trajectories and resilience factors for women after the pandemic.
- Evaluations of care delivery changes—including telehealth—for women’s mental health.
- Comparative studies on women’s mental health across the life course before, during, and after the pandemic.
- Analyses of social support, community resources, and policy in post-pandemic mental health care.
- Intersectional and cross-cultural research highlighting disparities among women in the post-COVID period.
- Policy-focused articles recommending ways to bolster women’s and perinatal mental health resilience.
