Background

Crisis management within the European Union has become a critical area of study, particularly in light of recent global and regional challenges. From economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic to climate emergencies and geopolitical tensions, the EU faces a complex landscape of interconnected crises. Understanding the EU’s capacity to navigate these challenges is vital for assessing and enhancing its multilevel governance structures. This field examines how EU mechanisms facilitate or hinder collective and national responses and evaluates the legal, institutional, and policy dimensions that underpin crisis governance across its diverse member states.

This Research Topic aims to delve into the effectiveness of the EU's crisis management mechanisms, exploring how they ensure coordinated and timely responses to diverse emergencies. By emphasizing comparative analyses across member states, it seeks to highlight how national approaches converge or diverge and how these dynamics interact with EU-level coordination. Critical questions include the examination of resilient governance models and the balance between subsidiarity and solidarity in times of crisis. The research will also explore transformations in the EU's resilience, preparedness, and recovery strategies brought about by recent experiences with crises.

To gather further insights in understanding the EU’s evolving role in crisis management, we welcome articles addressing but not limited to the following themes:
- Effectiveness of EU crisis response mechanisms
- Governance models demonstrating resilience across various emergencies
- Balancing subsidiarity and solidarity within EU institutions during crises
- Transformations in the EU's approach to resilience and preparedness
- Comparative analyses of national crisis management strategies and EU coordination

Submissions of both theoretical and empirical studies will add significant value to the evidence base for policymaking and institutional development within the EU.
