Background

The Topic Editors are delighted to present this latest volume in the Research Topic series on Wearable Computing (for the previous volumes, see Vol. I, Vol. II, and Vol. III).

Reflecting the tremendous progress made in wearable computing in recent years, this Research Topic offers a snapshot of the state of the art of this field, emphasizing recent breakthroughs and emerging trends that are transforming both research and practical applications. Specifically, this collection shines a spotlight on cutting-edge developments in human activity recognition made possible by the latest machine learning algorithms for wearables, innovative applications of wearable technologies for seamless human–computer interaction, and the integration of flexible e-textiles to enhance user comfort and functionality. This edition also expands the discussion to include transformative topics such as the integration of advanced language models, mixed and augmented reality applications, and novel multimodal approaches to learning, sensing and modeling. There is also a focus on data augmentation strategies and the generation of synthetic data to overcome real-world limitations, as well as developments in perceptual augmentation and haptics that push the boundaries of human sensory perception.

ISWC – the International Conference on Wearable Computers – is the leading event on all research related to wearable technology. Running since 1997, when the first ISWC was held at MIT, the conference serves as a testimony to the longevity of this area of research, in no small part due to the solid foundations laid by an interdisciplinary community spanning a broad range of areas from textile materials and microelectronic systems to information science.

This Research Topic invites authors of papers presented within the Briefs and Notes Track of ISWC to submit an extended version of their work to this collection. Such extended papers should include at least 30% new content, which offers the opportunity to provide additional details beyond what is possible in a conference publication. For instance, authors can expand upon on their work with further details on their motivation, related work, analysis, the presentation of their findings, or their discussion.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Wearable Computing
- Wearable Sensing
- Wearable AI
- Wearable Technology, including Smart Textiles, Earables and on-skin Interfaces
- Wearable Human–Computer Interfaces
- Human Activity Recognition
