Prevention and Management of Diabetes: Role of Health Systems Strengthening

Diabetes is a public health problem of global significance. According to WHO estimates, the prevalence of adults (aged 18 years or older) living with diabetes doubled between 1990 and 2022 to 14%. An alarming 60% of individuals aged 30 years and above report poor adherence to management. Low treatment coverage in low- and middle-income countries, particularly among the poor and vulnerable sections of the population, calls for a health systems approach to primary health care to curb the problem.

This Research Topic aims to disseminate research and good practices for preventing, treating, and managing diabetes and/or its risk factors. The Topic aims to publish research in innovative intervention models for early detection, treatment, service delivery, and implementation research to integrate diabetes care in primary health care from a health systems perspective.

This Research Topic welcomes systematic reviews and meta-analyses, formative research, models of intervention along with their impact or effectiveness, process evaluations, and economic evaluations. Observational studies conducted among marginalized and vulnerable populations may also be considered if there are strong, study-based policy recommendations aligned with strengthening health systems.

Suitable themes for manuscripts include (but are not limited to):

• Health systems assessment on utilization of services for management of diabetes
• Clinical research and evidence-based intervention models to improve access to care for type 1 diabetes
• Impact of counseling on adherence to treatment for diabetes management in resource-poor settings
• Treatment-seeking behavior among gender-diverse populations with diabetes
• Digital health technologies and artificial intelligence in screening, diagnosis, and disease management
