Background

With the widespread integration of distributed renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaics and wind generators, the distribution network is experiencing significant change from passive energy delivery system into active power distribution system, which is characterized by bidirectional power flows, the presence of numerous power electronics, and reduced system inertia. These changes have presented new challenges for system operation, especially concerning voltage and frequency stability, power quality, and the maintenance of energy balance under under uncertain and intermittent distributed generations. As a result, there is a growing demand for advanced research and novel solutions to address the evolving technical, operational, and economic demands in the distribution network.

Recent studies have highlighted the promise of integrating advanced system architectures, improved planning, and sophisticated operational strategies—along with flexible market mechanisms and cutting-edge computational tools—to foster reliable, adaptable, and economical distribution networks. Despite these advances, major gaps still remain in future distribution networks with high penetration of uncertain renewable energy.

This Research Topic aims to advance understanding and develop emerging solutions that enable distribution networks to efficiently accommodate high proportion of renewable energy. Key objectives include networking, planning, operation, control, stability analysis, and electricity marketing.

To gather further insights into the future design and operation of distribution networks with high penetration of renewable energy, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Concepts, topologies, and key technical features of future distribution networks;
• Uncertainty modeling and analysis of AC/DC distribution networks;
• Optimal planning methodologies for AC/DC distribution networks;
• Optimal operation strategies for multi-energy systems in distribution networks
