The One Health approach recognises that human health, animal health, and environmental health are interconnected and interdependent. However, this integrated framework has historically overlooked the experiences and contributions of persons with disabilities, representing a critical gap in health policy and practice. This Research Topic seeks to position disability and inclusion within One Health discourse and implementation.
We invite submissions exploring the multifaceted intersections of One Health, disability, and inclusion across diverse contexts and disciplines. Topics of interest include:
- how disability-inclusive principles can strengthen One Health initiatives, for example, in the area of emergency preparedness; - the health disparities experienced by persons with disabilities in vector-borne disease prevention and response; - accessibility barriers in environmental health programs; - the role of disability expertise in designing equitable eco-systems; and innovative community-based approaches initiated, organised and implemented by and with people with disabilities as agents of change.
We welcome primary empirical research, policy analyses, systematic reviews, and perspective pieces from epidemiologists, public health practitioners, disability scholars, environmental health professionals, veterinarians, and social scientists. Submissions should critically examine power dynamics, challenge ableist assumptions, and demonstrate how inclusion of disabled populations enhances One Health outcomes for all. This may apply to pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance, or the direct and indirect effects of climate change on communities, which create or exacerbate vulnerabilities and threaten inclusion, societal participation, and universal accessibility. Particularly welcome are contributions authored or co-authored by people with disabilities.
By bringing together diverse voices and expertise, this collection aims to advance a more equitable, rights-based One Health paradigm that recognises disability as integral to health equity rather than peripheral to it. We seek work that catalyses practical change, informs policy development, and honours the leadership of people with disabilities in building healthier, more inclusive societies.
