Background

This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume, which has attracted over 40,000 views can be found here: Bioengineering and Biotechnology Approaches in Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine

Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death while available clinical interventions have limited contributions to heart repair and regeneration. Cardiovascular regenerative medicine, characterized by a unique integration of biology, physical sciences, and bioengineering principles, has emerged as one of the most promising fields of translational research to regenerate the adult human heart. The field of cardiac cell and tissue engineering emerged to provide promising tools for understanding heart remodeling mechanisms and promoting heart repair through the combination of myocardial cells and biomaterials. Integration of novel technologies in multiscale cardiovascular bioengineering of genome, extracellular vesicles, cells, tissues for the purpose of disease modeling and regenerative medicine could be potentially transformative in fundamental science and clinical therapies. Therefore, an ever-growing attention has been given to the advancement of various bioengineering and biotechnology principles and their implementation in cardiovascular regenerative medicine.

This Research Topic aims to focus on the most recent advancements in the development of advanced bioengineering and biotechnological tools for cardiovascular regenerative medicine, drug screening and disease modeling.

This article collection will cover a wide spectrum of research subjects including (but not limited to):
- Advanced bio-manufacturing technologies to create functional cardiovascular tissues;
- Engineered cellular and molecular systems to regenerate heart tissue;
- Biomaterial systems for in vitro or in vivo regenerative therapies;
- Organoid and organ-on-chip systems for cardiovascular disease modeling;
- Advanced artificial intelligence technologies for cardiovascular applications;
- Design of microparticle and nanoparticle for controlled drug delivery and release; and
- Genome engineering for cardiovascular therapies

Keywords: bioengineering, biotechnology, cardiac organoids, engineering heart tissues, biomanufacturing
