Science and Environmental Communication aims to publish research at the cutting edge of knowledge about human communication and its various intersections with the natural world.
Read MoreScience and Environmental Communication is an open access journal section that aims to publish research at the cutting edge of knowledge about human communication and its various intersections with the natural world. It is highly interdisciplinary, borrowing questions from both social science and humanities, and welcoming multiple research methods, including critical, qualitative and quantitative approaches. Its aim is to further understanding of how humans and their social interaction simultaneously impacts and is impacted by Earth’s natural systems.
Science and Environmental Communication offers an international platform for exploring theoretical and pragmatic questions about how communication constitutes human understanding and how people use it to accomplish goals. The section defines science broadly to include the pursuit of knowledge via both social and natural sciences, as well as engineering. It defines environmental broadly to include anything related to the natural world and the impact of human activity on that world. By including research on science and the environment in a single section, Science and Environmental Communication mediates and promotes the vitality of interactions between the multiple knowledge domains that contribute to this area of research, including the problematization of nature. Research topics include communication within scientific and technical communities, communication of scientific and technical information to the public, constructing and communicating scientific expertise, diffusion of knowledge, communication of risk, communication about and with all aspects of nature, and the design and implementation of new media applications related to sustainability and the protection of natural ecosystems.

Articles published in the section Science and Environmental Communication will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in all Frontiers specialty journals and sections.
