Purpose-This study intends to experimentally evaluate the effect of strategic planning and finance system management on the performance of higher education institutions. Additionally, it studies how financial system management mediates the link between organizational performance and strategic planning in higher education (HE).Design/methodology/approach-This study takes a quantitative method. The academic staff of private universities in Indonesia were sent offline and online questionnaires to gather the data necessary to evaluate the hypotheses. The SPSS method is used to collect data from 249 respondents and assess the proposed associations (SPSS macro).Findings-The findings indicate that strategic planning and financial systems management have a direct impact on higher education institution performance. It also has a significant and effective impact on the management of financial systems. There is also an important and effective impact when testing the impact of strategic planning on performance via financial system management.Practical implications-To properly implement quality management in higher education, directors must recognize the various roles that strategic planning and financial system management can play in organizational performance. To achieve overall performance effectiveness, higher education institutions [1] must allocate resources to establish both types of strategic planning and financial systems management practices.Originality/value-Despite the fact that numerous studies have been conducted on the relationship between strategic planning and organizational performance in higher education, studies on financial system management in higher education are still scarce. This paper is one of the first studies to use a multidimensional approach to strategic planning and financial system management in higher education, which could help directors understand the interdependence and various roles of strategic planning and financial system management practices.
