Frontiers journals are at the top of citation and impact metrics
The Infectious Diseases section within Frontiers in Microbiology provides a publication platform for high-quality research on infectious diseases, which encompass the broad spectrum of host-microbe interaction from dysbiotic conditions to “classical” and newly-emerging infections. Thus research findings that contribute to our understanding of the encounter between microorganisms and the human host are the focus of this section. Studies integrating cellular, molecular, regulatory, biochemical and proteomic aspects of infection and host responses as well as studies on relevant animal models are welcome. Please note that infectious disease aspects such as surveillance, prevention and treatment are considered by Frontiers in Medicine and Frontiers in Public Health in the specialty section ”Infectious Diseases – Surveillance, Prevention and Treatment”. Epidemiological studies are also considered by Frontiers in Public Health, specialty section ”Epidemiology”. Manuscripts on veterinary infectious diseases are considered by the corresponding section in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. These medical journals also consider Case Reports, which we do not publish.

Infectious Diseases welcomes submissions of the following article types: Correction, Editorial, General Commentary, Hypothesis and Theory, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Review, Specialty Grand Challenge and Technology and Code.
All manuscripts must be submitted directly to the section Infectious Diseases, where they are peer-reviewed by the Associate and Review Editors of the specialty section.
Articles published in the section Infectious Diseases will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in all Frontiers specialty journals and sections. Focused Reviews are centered on the original discovery, place it into a broader context, and aim to address the wider community across all of Microbiology.
