Background

In environmental and agricultural studies, the shift toward a circular economy (CE) is gaining momentum as a crucial strategy for sustainable resource management and facing climate change challenges. The CE model counters the traditional 'take-make-waste' framework by drastically reducing waste while maximizing resource reuse and recycling. This approach is particularly pivotal in agriculture where it promises to revolutionize water use efficiency, and soil and crop management, thereby enhancing overall system sustainability.

This research topic explores pioneering advancements that integrate soil, water, and crop management within an agroecological context to amplify ecosystem services. With the escalating interest in CE principles, there is a pressing need to dissect the technological, policy-oriented, and socioeconomic challenges that limit their full-scale adoption in agriculture. Addressing these challenges is essential to fostering a resilient and sustainable agricultural framework aligned with CE principles.

To further this aim, the scope of this Research Topic is structured to incorporate a broad spectrum of scholarly submissions that explore innovative practices and strategies under the CE umbrella. We are particularly interested in contributions from participants of the ICWAS conference, as well as global researchers committed to pushing the frontiers of agroecology and circular economy. Below outlines the specific themes we are eager to explore:

• Agroecological, Organic, and Regenerative farming techniques for enhanced soil health.
• Technological innovations in digital agriculture for improved resource management.
• Strategies for water conservation, smart reuse, and nutrient recycling.
• Carbon sequestration and soil remediation approaches.
• Economic and policy innovations supporting sustainable resource and waste management.
• Case studies on effective CE implementations in agriculture.
• Multidisciplinary studies on the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystem Nexus.
