About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is closed for submissions.

Background

Agriculture faces the dual challenge of mitigating climate change impacts while ensuring ecological sustainability, as soil degradation continues to undermine global food security. Traditional agricultural practices often exacerbate these issues. However, emerging research highlights the potential of resource conservation techniques focused on enhancing soil health, improving water use, reducing erosion, and mitigating flooding, drought, and biotic stresses.

Conservation agriculture, sustainable soil management, and climate-resilient practices have proven effective in enhancing soil health, ensuring productivity, and maintaining ecological balance. Although long-term cropping systems experiments offer valuable insights, much existing research is fragmented, concentrating on isolated practices such as conservation tillage, crop residue management, or organic amendments without a holistic perspective. Additionally, there is a notable lack of data from working farms, which could provide essential real-world insights into these practices' feasibility and scalability. This research gap is critical as increasing interest and government incentives, like partnerships for Climate-Smart practices, drive the integration of sustainable methods into mainstream agriculture.

This research topic explores the synergy between resource conservation, soil health enhancement, and climate resilience. It emphasizes the need for an ecosystem-based approach, integrating resource-efficient technologies like precision agriculture and carbon-capture methods with sustainable farming practices to boost overall system resilience and productivity. Additionally, it examines the socio-economic impacts of these practices, especially on smallholder farmers, while considering the scalability of implemented strategies. Researchers engaged in climate-smart initiatives, aimed at enhancing agricultural sustainability and resilience, are encouraged to contribute their findings.

To deepen understanding of sustainable agricultural practices—those that meet current needs while preserving environmental quality, supporting economic viability, and promoting social equity—submissions are invited on themes such as:

Integration of conservation agriculture with advanced resource management techniques
Innovative methods to enhance soil carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse emissions
Climate-resilient farming practices tailored to local and regional conditions
Socio-economic analyses of the adoption and impact of sustainable practices on communities
Case studies on the long-term benefits and scalability of precision agriculture and conservation technologies

By leveraging multidisciplinary research and case studies, this special issue aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of how sustainable practices can be effectively integrated to ensure food security and resilience against climate variability.
