Background

Neurodegenerative diseases are marked by the progressive and irreversible decline of neuron function within specific brain regions, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. These disorders involve significant changes in cerebral glucose metabolism and lipid processes, which are crucial for both cellular function and molecular mechanisms. Despite growing interest and research into metabolic pathways as targets for therapy, there remains a substantial gap in understanding how metabolic dysregulation aids disease advancement and how it can be effectively targeted.

This Research Topic aims to address and clarify the mechanisms through which metabolic dysregulation contributes to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases and explore therapeutic strategies to modulate these pathways. The focus is on understanding the intersection of metabolism and disease progression, highlighting recent advancements that propose metabolic pathways as potential therapeutic targets.

To gather further insights into the complex interactions between metabolism and neurodegeneration, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

The role of mitochondrial energy disruption, oxidative stress, and metabolic abnormalities in the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

The effects of metabolic changes in microglia, particularly the shift to enhanced glycolysis during inflammation, and their implications for disease progression.

Comprehensive studies on metabolic dysfunctions' contributions to neurodegenerative diseases and identifying new therapeutic targets.

Examination of microbial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids and neurotransmitters like serotonin, on neurodegeneration.

Potential therapeutic implications of various compounds derived from amino acid metabolism in treating neurodegenerative diseases.

Innovative Pharmacological Interventions Targeting Lipid Metabolism in Neurodegenerative Disorders.
