Background

The field of health information systems in Europe faces significant challenges due to the disparate standards and methodologies used in collecting and processing health statistics. Decision-makers across the continent rely on these indicators to gauge population health needs, care quality, and outcomes. However, the varying degrees of data standardization and reliance on incomplete clinical data from specialized networks create biases and interpretation errors, leading to increased costs and inefficiencies.

This Research Topic aims to develop and refine the Collaborative Health Information European Framework (CHIEF), with a focus on addressing the crucial barriers that have historically hindered the effective collection of health data on a pan-European scale. By proposing innovative solutions, CHIEF seeks to facilitate the regular, sustainable, and scalable aggregation of health indicators, supporting better integration across the European health information systems. Solutions explored within this Research Topic pertain to the standardization of health indicators and analytical techniques, and adherence to stringent data protection laws.

To gather further insights into the functional and legal framework required, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Metadata and Indicator Contextualization: Developing comprehensive models for consistent health data representation and processing across varying disease contexts.

- Federated Data Analysis: Innovations in analytic methods that respect privacy concerns while providing robust health monitoring capabilities.

- Barriers and Enablers of Data Linkage and System Integration: Exploring regulatory and social challenges in data integration, proposing solutions for effective data linkage within strict privacy frameworks.

- Standardization Practices: Examining methods for establishing uniform health indicators and analysis techniques across the EU.

- Patient and Stakeholder Engagement: Strategies to involve patients and stakeholders in the indicator development process to ensure relevant and accurate health data.

Accepted article types include original research, method, review, and evaluation articles based on CHIEF deliverables, tailored according to journal format and editorial rules.

Please note, this topic is through invite only.
