About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is closed for submissions.

Background

Action oriented, community driven research stands as a pivotal methodology within public health, renowned for its integrative approach that unites multi-sectoral, community members, organizations and leaders to address locally identified priority health concerns. As we delve deeper into the range of participatory and community centered methodologies, this research topic sheds light on their transformative effects within the health sector, highlighting the cooperative dynamics between academic institutions and communities to develop solutions that are specifically tailored to meet local needs. Despite its widespread adoption, challenges still exist in effectively implementing community-driven research initiatives across diverse health contexts, including mental health, public safety, equity issues, and indigenous health concerns, and particularly in addressing social and structural determinants of health.

This Research Topic seeks to assemble a wide spectrum of perspectives and methodologies, including those that critically evaluate the challenges and opportunities from both academic and community perspectives. Our goal is to foster robust dialogue and contribute to insights that enhance participatory community-driven research practices, thereby underscoring the transformational potential of the vast array of approaches in catalyzing substantial public health innovations and strengthening community engagement in health initiatives.

We invite manuscripts that explore highly participatory and creative methodologies aimed at enhancing community participation in health-related research. We are particularly interested in submissions that focus on:

• Participatory Methods of Data Collection: Approaches that empower communities, such as Photovoice, where participants capture their experiences through photography, and Participatory Mapping, which involves communities in creating maps to reflect their lived experiences. Community forums and focus groups that facilitate open dialogues with marginalized groups, and Digital Storytelling, which uses multimedia to document personal narratives, are also of interest.
• Collaborative Analysis Approaches: Methods that foster shared decision-making, including Consensus Workshops, where stakeholders work together to interpret data, and Co-interpretation of Qualitative Data, where community members are involved in coding and analyzing data to ensure cultural relevance and accuracy.
• Efforts for Policy, Environmental, and Systems Change: Research that emphasizes community-driven change, such as Community-based Participatory and Action Research, where communities are actively engaged in all stages of the research process, and Participatory Evaluation, which involves communities in assessing and shaping program outcomes.
• Priority will be given to research that highlights community-university co-authorship, demonstrating how partnerships between academic institutions and communities can lead to more equitable, impactful health research outcomes.

We encourage innovative, inclusive, and community-driven approaches that challenge traditional research paradigms. Submissions from diverse geographic regions and communities are welcomed.

Important note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
