Background

The mental health of refugees, a subgroup of first-generation migrants, is an increasingly critical concern within public health discourse. Refugees, often fleeing conflict or persecution, face an array of challenges during the resettlement process that profoundly affect their psychological well-being. These challenges include cultural dislocation, socio-economic pressures, and the lingering effects of pre-migration experiences like trauma and violence. The additional trauma related to their journey and reasons for fleeing—such as violence, persecution, or war—exacerbates the mental health challenges faced by refugees. Recent studies highlight the significant role of both protective factors—such as community networks and cultural connections—and risk factors—such as discrimination and economic instability—in shaping the mental health outcomes of refugees. While existing research sheds light on personal experiences and community dynamics, there is an urgent need to explore how these elements interact with broader societal structures and policies, especially for refugee populations.

This Research Topic aims to fill significant knowledge gaps concerning refugee mental health by exploring various influential dynamics. The primary goal is to advance understanding of how diverse factors contribute to mental health outcomes for refugees and to develop strategies that enhance mental resilience and well-being. This collection welcomes articles that investigate the protective and risk factors associated with refugee mental health, the effectiveness of social support systems, comparative studies of institutional versus community-based care, the influence of policy frameworks, and the development of culturally adapted interventions.

To gather further insights into promoting mental health and resilience among refugees, this collection welcomes articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Intergenerational mental health dynamics among refugee families.
• The impact of language barriers on access to mental health services for refugees.
• Psychosocial interventions in post-trauma recovery for refugees.
• Gender-specific mental health issues in refugee populations.
• Effects of past trauma on refugee mental health and intervention strategies.
• Influence of economic instability on refugee well-being.
• Challenges of identity and cultural adaptation affecting refugee mental health.
• Role of social networks and cultural ties in fostering resilience among refugees.
• Impact of immigration policies on refugees’ access to mental health care.
