About this Research Topic

Background

The integration of economic and health policy frameworks is increasingly recognized as fundamental to ensuring proper preparedness and response capacity for future pandemics. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities and gaps in current international and domestic health systems, highlighting how public health crises rapidly translate into widespread economic disruption. Recent studies have affirmed the interdependence of health infrastructure investment and economic resilience, demonstrating that robust, adequately financed healthcare systems are better able to respond effectively while minimizing economic shocks. Nevertheless, many countries continue to struggle with formulating and operationalizing comprehensive policies that simultaneously strengthen health system responsiveness and maintain economic stability during major emergencies.

This Research Topic aims to explore and propose integrated models aligning economic frameworks with health policy objectives to enhance global capacities for pandemic preparedness and response. Specifically, the collection seeks to address the challenges of sustainable financing mechanisms, optimal resource allocation, cost-effective public health interventions, and resilient workforce development to ensure reliable and equitable health service availability even under crisis conditions. The intended goal is to produce actionable insights and robust policy solutions that national and international health bodies can implement to effectively protect public health while minimizing economic disruption during future pandemics.

To gather further insights within the intersection of economic and health policy integration for pandemic preparedness, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Innovative financing mechanisms and resource allocation strategies for sustainable healthcare infrastructure investments;

- Economic evaluation of cost-effective public health and vaccination policies in pandemic scenarios;

- Role and impact of global governance and international collaborations on pandemic preparedness and health policy effectiveness;

- Modeling and forecasting tools for predicting economic and health outcomes under different pandemic response policies;

- Health workforce strategies and economic incentives for enhancing resilience and responsiveness in future health crises.
