Background

Despite advancements in microbial safety strategies, agri-food systems remain vulnerable to microbial infections, posing significant threats to food safety, human health, and agricultural productivity globally. In recent years, society at consumer as well as institutional level has become aware of the urgent need to solve problems in a sustainable and holistic manner as promoted by the One Health vision. The One Health approach encourages the implementation of environmentally responsible, sustainable, and interdisciplinary strategies to combat pathogenic microorganisms while safeguarding ecosystem and human health.

This Research Topic aims to evaluate and consolidate studies presenting the main avenues of innovative biotechnology applications and microbial biocontrol strategies targeted at reducing microbial infections within agri-food environments. By focusing on innovative approaches designed to harmonize the interactions of microbial control measures with environmental and human health considerations, researchers are encouraged to explore questions around how emerging technologies in biotechnology can lead to breakthroughs in reducing microbial threats in agri-food environments.

To gather further insights we welcome original research, reviews, mini reviews, methods, and perspective articles addressing topics that include, but are not limited to:

- Use of micro-organisms as disinfectants
- Evaluation of biocontrol strategies
- Evaluation of the biotechnological potential of probiotic bacteria and their structures
