Background

Foodborne diseases represent a significant public health challenge worldwide, contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality. These diseases, caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances entering the food chain, pose a considerable burden on healthcare systems and economies. Enhanced surveillance, timely detection, and effective prevention measures are critical in managing and reducing the impact of foodborne illnesses. Despite progress in understanding transmission dynamics and developing response strategies, challenges remain in creating scalable and sustainable surveillance systems that can effectively mitigate risk and convey information rapidly to stakeholders.

This Research Topic aims to explore cutting-edge developments in foodborne disease surveillance and prevention, targeting improved methodologies for detection, monitoring, and intervention. The focus is on integrating novel technologies, data analytics, and interdisciplinary approaches to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of foodborne disease systems globally. We seek to investigate questions such as how to improve data sharing between stakeholders, what role big data and AI can play in early detection, and how best to implement these innovations in diverse settings. Other goals include addressing barriers in communication within the food supply chain and maximizing public awareness and engagement, all while protecting public health.
