Socio-Cultural Intersections of Migration and Ageing: Challenges and Solutions for the Southern Hemisphere

Population ageing is an increasing global concern, with both developed and developing nations facing unique challenges related to the ageing population. Concurrently, migration is an inevitable phenomenon that further complicates the demographic landscape. In low and middle-income countries, the migration of children to the developed world poses significant challenges for the older adults left behind, necessitating adjustments in care provision, emotional support, and overall wellbeing. Additionally, the growing participation of women in the workforce in developing nations challenges the traditional caregiving roles predominantly assigned to women. Despite these rapid societal changes and the influence of socio-cultural factors, limited exploration has been done on these matters, particularly within the South-South context.

This Research Topic aims to investigate the multifaceted challenges and opportunities posed by population ageing and migration from an interdisciplinary perspective. Central to this exploration is the goal to advance knowledge and provide evidence-based insights on diverse critical issues, including gender dynamics, labor concerns, health and wellbeing, and how older adults adapt to these changing times. By examining the socio-cultural and political contexts specific to different societies, the research aims to offer tailored solutions that complement the distinct experiences faced by the Global South, where the simultaneous occurrence of youth migration and rapid population ageing demands policy-focused research contributions.

To gather further insights into the spectrum of migration and ageing dynamics in the Global South, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

Care issues of older adults in migration contexts.

Policy changes and gendered migration from the Global South.

The intersection of gender roles, caregiving, and migration.

Health and wellbeing concerns for older adults left behind.

The engagement with digital means for kinship and care provision.

Economic dependency and independence of older adults amidst these changes.

We also encourage submissions in the form of original research, reviews, case studies, policy analyses, and theoretical explorations related to the outlined themes.
