About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is currently accepting articles, but is closing soon.

Background

The field of renewable energy sources (RES) such as wind power and photovoltaics (PV) has seen impressive growth worldwide, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future. Meanwhile, High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technology is pivotal in effectively integrating and handling large-scale renewable generation due to its low losses, high power transfer ability, and adaptable controllability. Despite the potential, the widespread use of power electronics devices in both RES and HVDC systems has introduced intricate coupling effects. These effects pose a risk as a single grid contingency can lead to severe cascading failures impacting renewable and HVDC infrastructures, subsequently degrading renewable energy utilization rates. This underlines the urgency of achieving a harmonious development between renewable energy and HVDC technology—a critical technical challenge facing the industry.

This Research Topic aims to explore the untapped potential present in renewable energy and HVDC systems, particularly focusing on the myriad of power electronics converters they leverage. These converters, known for their flexible controllability and quick dynamic response, suggest a promising avenue for innovation. By maximizing the control capabilities across diverse converter types and developing coordinated control strategies for multi-converter systems, we can uncover innovative solutions that propel the synergistic growth of renewable energy and HVDC technologies.

To gather further insights in the domain of renewable energy and HVDC technology integration, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Fault ride-through (FRT) enhancement;
• Grid-frequency support schemes;
• Voltage regulation techniques;
• Grid-friendly interaction mechanisms
• HVDC converter topology design;
• Renewable plant structural configuration
