Background

This Research Topic is the third volume of the “Exploring the Interaction between Health-promoting and Health Risk Behaviors in Health”. Please see the first volume here and second volume here.

In the field of health and behavioral sciences, the coexistence of health-promoting and health-risk behaviors significantly influences individual and public health outcomes. Behaviors such as excessive screen time, substance use, and sleep deprivation negatively impact both mental and physical health. However, health-promoting behaviors like regular physical activity and balanced nutrition can potentially counteract the negative effects of risky behaviors. Despite this, some studies indicate that not all harmful effects of health-risk behaviors can be curbed by positive behaviors. For instance, sedentary lifestyles and physical activity may affect health outcomes independently, prompting a need for unique strategies when interventions aim to increase one while decreasing the other. There is a clear demand for comprehensive research to understand these interactions, which remains underexplored.

This Research Topic aims to enhance understanding of how health-promoting and health-risk behaviors interact to affect health. The objective is to uncover conclusive insights into whether and how positive behaviors deter the negative impacts of risky behaviors, and under what conditions separate or combined interventions may achieve optimal health outcomes. We seek to address questions such as: What are the mechanisms through which positive behaviors mitigate harm, and are there specific contexts where risk behaviors remain unchallenged?

To gather further insights into these complex interactions, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Observational research, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses exploring interconnections between health-promoting and risk behaviors
• Experimental studies on interventions designed to bolster health-promoting behaviors and their effects on reducing risky behaviors
• Studies employing isotemporal substitution modeling to replace sedentary activities with beneficial physical pursuits or restfulness
• Investigations into the independent vs. interactive effects of health behaviors on diverse health outcomes
• Cross-disciplinary approaches to integrating behavioral strategies into public health policy
