Background

In the context of accelerating global environmental changes, the interactions between nature and society have become increasingly intricate and influential. Human activities, such as urbanization, industrialization, and agricultural expansion, are significantly altering natural ecosystems, while environmental changes, including climate change and biodiversity loss, are posing substantial challenges to societal development. Understanding the complex feedback mechanisms between these two systems is crucial for achieving sustainable development. This research topic aims to explore the latest advancements in understanding how natural and social systems interact and respond to each other, with a focus on the underlying processes, impacts, and potential solutions. By integrating multidisciplinary approaches, we seek to provide new insights into the dynamic relationship between nature and society, informing effective strategies for environmental management and policy-making.

The primary goal of this Research Topic is to explore the complex and dynamic interactions between natural and social systems and their environmental responses in the context of global environmental change. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of how human activities impact natural processes and how environmental changes, in turn, affect societal development. To achieve this goal, we aim to bring together cutting-edge research to explore the mechanisms behind these interactions, assess their impacts on ecosystems and human well-being, and identify effective strategies for sustainable environmental management.

In recent years, interdisciplinary research has provided valuable insights into specific aspects of nature-society interactions, such as the role of ecosystem services in human well-being, the impacts of land use change on biodiversity, and the social dimensions of climate change adaptation. Advances in remote sensing and geospatial analysis have also enhanced our ability to monitor and analyze land use changes and their environmental impacts. However, there is still a need for more integrated and holistic approaches to consider the feedback loops and cumulative effects of these interactions. This Research Topic will integrate these recent advances to construct a comprehensive framework for understanding the interactions between nature and society, elucidate the mechanisms of environmental responses, and provide a scientific basis for sustainable environmental development.

This Research Topic is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the interactions between natural and social systems and their environmental responses. We invite contributions that address the following specific themes:
• Mechanisms of interaction between natural and social systems.
• Impacts of human activities on natural processes and vice versa.
• Ecosystem services and their role in human well-being.
• Land Use Change and its environmental consequences.
• Climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
• Ecological restoration and social participation.
• Environmental policy and its effectiveness in promoting sustainable development.
We welcome a variety of manuscript types, including original research articles, review papers, case studies, and perspectives. Submissions should present novel insights, methodologies, or applications that contribute to the field. Authors are encouraged to use interdisciplinary approaches and innovative methodologies to address the complex nature of the interactions between natural and social systems.
