Background

Air pollution is a pressing concern in the field of public health, particularly regarding its impact on vulnerable populations such as children. Recent studies have highlighted the detrimental effects of poor air quality on human health, including increased risks of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as cognitive impairments. Children, with their developing organ systems and higher respiratory rates, are especially susceptible to these adverse effects. Schools, where children spend a significant portion of their day, are critical environments that should ideally support both learning and health. However, many schools are located near major roads, exposing children to high levels of traffic-related air pollution. Additionally, indoor air quality in schools can be compromised by pollutants from furnishings, educational equipment, and cleaning activities. Despite growing awareness, there remains a gap in understanding the specific impacts of various pollutants and the effectiveness of interventions to mitigate these risks.

This research topic aims to deepen our understanding of how air pollutants in commuting environments and in and around schools affect children's physical and mental health, as well as their academic performance. The research will explore the potential threats posed by traffic-related air pollution during school commutes and the detrimental effects of poor air quality within school premises. Key questions include the direct impact of pollutants like CO2 on cognitive function and the broader implications of exposure to particulate matter and volatile organic compounds. By identifying which pollutants and sources have the most significant impact, the research seeks to inform targeted interventions and policy decisions to create healthier school environments.

To gather further insights into the impact of air quality on children in school settings, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Effects of ambient and indoor air pollutants on children's physical and mental health
- Symptoms associated with poor air quality, such as allergies, asthma, and headaches
- Overall wellbeing and its correlation with air quality
- Cognitive performance and development in relation to air pollution exposure
- Learning outcomes affected by air quality in school environments

This research will focus on children attending primary and secondary schools, aiming to provide comprehensive insights that can guide policy makers and school administrators in fostering healthier educational settings.
