About this Research Topic

Background

Oral neoplasms, or tumors, in children and young adults represent a distinct and relatively rare subset of oncological conditions within the broader field of pediatric and adolescent medicine. Unlike neoplasms in elderly individuals, those affecting the oral cavity in younger individuals pose unique challenges due to the developmental characteristics of the oral tissues, differences in etiological factors, and the potential impact on the overall health and growth of the affected individuals. Current research has highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of the histological variations, prevalence, and anatomical distribution of these neoplasms. Despite some progress, significant gaps remain in our knowledge regarding the genetic predispositions, syndromic associations, and environmental factors contributing to these conditions. Addressing these gaps is crucial for developing age-specific diagnostic guidelines and optimizing treatment strategies that minimize long-term functional and aesthetic sequelae.

This research topic aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of oral neoplasms in the pediatric and young adult population, with a focus on addressing unique challenges related to diagnosis, etiology, and management. Specific objectives include characterizing the spectrum of oral neoplasms in this age group, exploring etiological factors, investigating genetic predispositions, and developing age-specific diagnostic and treatment guidelines. By answering these questions and testing relevant hypotheses, the research aims to improve early detection, intervention, and overall outcomes for affected individuals.

To gather further insights into the complexities of oral neoplasms in children and young adults, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Characterization of oral neoplasms, including histological variations, prevalence, and anatomical distribution.
- Exploration of etiological factors, including genetic predispositions, syndromic associations, and environmental influences.
- Development of age-specific diagnostic guidelines.
- Optimization of treatment strategies tailored to the developmental stage of patients.
- Knowledge dissemination and education to raise awareness and promote early detection and intervention among healthcare professionals.
