The field of global health has continually faced the challenge of malnutrition, an issue that affects millions of individuals across the globe. The complexity of malnutrition is evolving, marked by its various forms—undernutrition and overnutrition—and their diverse effects across different demographics and regions. Current research spotlights malnutrition as a critical global health concern exacerbated by intersecting health factors that complicate its resolution. Despite targeted global efforts, many countries are falling short of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda's goal to end malnutrition by 2030, presenting an urgent need for reassessment and innovative strategies.
This Research Topic aims to investigate the reasons behind the stagnation and, in some cases, regression in progress toward global malnutrition targets. It seeks to dissect the nuance of malnutrition beyond the traditional binary understanding, considering the complex interplay between undernutrition and overnutrition. The main objectives include examining demographic and socioeconomic changes, global trade impacts on food systems, and devising comprehensive detection, prevention, and intervention approaches. Through a multidisciplinary lens combining public health policy, nutritional science, and international health frameworks, this research seeks to elucidate holistic and forward-looking solutions that address the malnutrition crisis effectively.
To gather further insights, this research will confine itself to innovative detection, prevention, and intervention strategies against the multifaceted malnutrition crisis. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Socioeconomic and demographic influences on malnutrition trends; - Interactions between undernutrition and overnutrition across diverse populations; - Impacts of global trade patterns on food systems and nutritional outcomes; - Development and assessment of improved nutritional policies and programs; - Multidisciplinary strategies for sustainable health interventions and policymaking.
