Frontiers journals are at the top of citation and impact metrics
Frontiers in Earth Science is an open-access journal that aims to publish rigorously peer-reviewed research dedicated to our planet.
The journal publishes across a wide spectrum of the rapidly growing and continuously expanding domains in Earth Sciences, involving the solid Earth, hydrosphere, and the atmosphere. Our goal is to contribute towards the understanding of the functioning of the processes involved by publishing new discoveries, insights, as well as their theoretical background.
Our ultimate mission is to enable the society to better use the available resources and face and mitigate the effects of major natural hazards and environmental challenges (including earthquakes, tsunamis, eruptions, floods, landslides, climate change, as well as extreme meteorological events). This is where interdependent processes meet, requiring a holistic view for a sustainable future.
General Commentary articles, as well as Book Reviews, are only considered upon invitation in the journal.
Frontiers in Earth Science is member of the Committee on Publication Ethics.

Frontiers in Earth Science is composed of the following Specialty Sections:
The specialty sections of Frontiers in Earth Science welcome submission of the following article types: Correction, Editorial, Erratum, General Commentary, Hypothesis and Theory, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Review, Specialty Grand Challenge, Technology Report, Data Report, Protocols, Book Review, Policy and Practice Reviews, Policy Brief, Systematic Review and Brief Research Report.
When submitting a manuscript to Frontiers in Earth Science, authors must submit the material directly to one of the specialty sections. Manuscripts are peer-reviewed by the Associate and Review Editors of the respective specialty section.
Articles published in the specialty sections above will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in the Frontiers specialty journals and sections. Focused Reviews are centered on the original discovery, place it into a broader context, and aim to address the wider community across all of Earth Science.
