Cities are leading the response to a range of societal challenges, with new forms of governance emerging to address sustainability challenges in more innovative, inclusive and effective ways. Governance shapes processes of urbanisation and is critical to instigating and managing change by bringing new combinations of public, private, third sector and community actors together, but both governance and cities are changing rapidly.
The mission of Governance and Cities is to host innovative research that addresses, debates and shapes the cutting edge of this trend in both the Global North and Global South. In particular, the section focuses on:

Governance and Cities welcomes submissions of the following article types: Book Review, Brief Research Report, Case Report, Community Case Study, Correction, Editorial, Focused Review, Frontiers Commentary, General Commentary, Hypothesis and Theory, Letter to the Editor, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Policy and Practice Reviews, Policy Brief, Review, Specialty Grand Challenge and Systematic Review.
All manuscripts must be submitted directly to the section Governance and Cities, where they are peer-reviewed by the Associate and Review Editors of the specialty section.
Articles published in the section Governance and Cities will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in all Frontiers specialty journals and sections. Focused Reviews are centered on the original discovery, place it into a broader context, and aim to address the wider community across all of Sustainable Cities.
