Background

Cardiovascular and vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, stenosis, aneurysm, dissection, hypertension, heart failure, valvular disease, deep venous thrombosis, etc., are closely related to the basic science mechanisms of cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics and, to some extent, to the skeletal system. The initiation, development, diagnosis, treatment, prediction, and prevention of these fatal congenital/aging-related diseases are the interdisciplinary research focus areas of biomedical engineering, particularly cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics. In the research field of cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics alone, there are numerous and profound research topics that attract the attention of many specialists worldwide. From a temporal point of view, there are issues in this field that relate to the moment and the lifespan. From a spatial point of view, there are issues in this field at the micro and macro scales. From a scientific, technical, and engineering point of view, there are various issues related to biomechanics. In the new century, various new approaches and their applications in cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics are emerging, such as the development of interdisciplinarity between cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics and information technology, omics of the mechanical gene, skeletal-muscular homeostasis (a new concept denoting the interaction and balance of calcium between the skeleton and the vascular system), etc. All these new approaches have been linked to the fundamental approaches of biomechanics and their clinical applications. The motivation of this collection of research topics is to show the current state of research in the field of new approaches and their applications in cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics.

The general objective of this Research Topic is to promote the exchange and development of scientific research and technical application of biomechanics in the challenging field of human cardiovascular and vascular disease. Contributions on theoretical, methodological, or practical aspects of cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics are welcome. This research topic will provide an opportunity for scientists and engineers to present new ideas and their applications of cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics in the evaluation of circulatory systems and subsystems under various physiological and pathological conditions. More attention is paid to the research and development of new approaches, evaluation indices for surgical planning, precise medical approaches, and rapid solution strategies based on the mechanisms of cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics. This research topic can contribute to the understanding of the complex human cardiovascular and vascular systems and related surrounding systems to create an applicable assessment index and make better clinical decisions about assessments and treatments, demonstrating the bridging function between fundamental research and clinical application.

The general framework of this research topic is recent studies on cardiovascular and vascular biomechanics. Both research papers and review articles are welcome. This concern involves but is not limited to the following issues.

- Recognition and evaluation of pulse wave propagation in the circulatory system.
- Bilateral relationship between skeletal and vascular systems, here we call it "skeletal-muscular homeostasis", which is a new research field for diseases of human aging.
