Carbonate rock/sediment is one of the commonest sedimentary products on our planet and is widespread in a variety of environments in the present-day and geological past marine and lacustrine depositional systems. Ancient carbonate rock/sediment mainly includes limestone and dolostone. In the carbonate rock/sediment, the organic matter of terrestrial and/or marine origins can accumulate and be preserved, therefor forming hydrocarbon resources in the burial realm. Further, pore and cavity systems within the carbonate rock/sediment provide conduits and storage space for the hydrocarbon resources. Important hydrocarbon reservoirs have developed in the carbonate rock/sediment, of which some good cases exist in the Middle East and South China. Carbonate reservoirs have various pore types and contain abundant oil and gas resources. However, in long depositional and diagenetic processes, different depositional environments, diagenesis types, and diagenesis conditions (e.g., temperature and pressure conditions, mineral composition, fluid properties, etc.) will cause a great difference in the porosity development of carbonate reservoirs, resulting in a strong heterogeneity of carbonate reservoirs, which can further influence the prediction of the potential reservoir. Therefore, carbonate deposition and diagenesis affect the entire process from carbonate reservoir formation to subsequent oil and gas exploration, including the material basis of reservoir formation, pore evolution process, and reservoir prediction.
The temporal-spatial matching relationship between the sedimentary-diagenetic system and the reservoirs in the petroliferous basin is one hotspot in the field of sedimentology and petroleum geology. The carbonate sedimentary facies establishes the physical basis for diagenesis, and the dual action of sedimentation and diagenesis determines the reservoir quality. Therefore, it is of great theoretical significance and practical value for the hydrocarbon exploration and the development of carbonate reservoirs to deeply analyze the sedimentary process of carbonate rock and the diagenesis of different periods and types in the reservoir, and to clarify the formation, evolution, scale and spatial and temporal distribution of carbonate reservoirs.
