Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 31 January 2026

  2. This Research Topic is currently accepting articles.

Background

Metamaterials offer unique properties by combining "meta" (beyond) and "material," providing electromagnetic characteristics superior to conventional materials. This innovation is pivotal in telecommunication and imaging systems, addressing the increasing demands in these fields. Researchers are exploring cutting-edge domains like quantum components and optical technologies to enhance traditional electromagnetic devices. The advancement in plasmonic metamaterials, demonstrating properties unseen in natural substances, alongside the development of Quantum Metamaterials (QMM), artificial nanostructures composed of quantum elements, is reshaping optics and photonics.

This Research Topic aims to present cutting-edge developments in electromagnetic metamaterials and metasurfaces, including surface plasmonics and quantum metamaterials, focusing on new designs, physical principles, and functionalities. The goal is to foster rapid advancements, drawing interest from researchers and stimulating exploration into the applications of advanced electromagnetic materials and devices. This initiative hopes to support the generation of practical applications and the realization of these technologies in the near future.

To gather further insights into the current and future potential of metamaterials, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Theory and modeling of metamaterials/metasurfaces
- Applications of metamaterials/metasurfaces in antennas and RF devices
- Quantum photonics developments utilizing metamaterials/metasurfaces
- Innovations in plasmonics and novel optical devices
- Advances in microwave, millimeter-wave, and terahertz circuits and devices
- Cutting-edge research in antennas and propagation

Through a comprehensive collection of innovative research, this Research Topic aims to scaffold the theoretical foundations, technological developments, and practical implementations of metamaterials and electromagnetic technologies.
