Background

STEM Education has increasingly emerged as a critical component in preparing students for the demands of the 21st century. As observed in the successful first volume of this Research Topic "STEM: Innovation on Teaching and Learning" (https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/48491/stem-innovation-on-teaching-and-learning), ongoing innovation in teaching and learning practices plays a crucial role in enhancing quality education and effectively responding to contemporary societal challenges.

The rapid technological advancements, particularly the widespread integration of artificial intelligence (AI), have introduced both significant opportunities and unique challenges within educational contexts. Currently, there is an ongoing necessity for deeper exploration into how innovative teaching methodologies and digital tools, including AI, can effectively enhance STEM education across various educational levels. Recent research highlights diverse innovative teaching approaches, yet there remains space for investigating practical implications, effectiveness, and sustainability of such innovations, particularly within pre-service and in-service teacher training contexts.

This Research Topic aims to gather comprehensive and high-quality research exploring innovative teaching practices, the integration of artificial intelligence in STEM education, and the subsequent impact on developing critical 21st century competencies. We particularly invite research that explores practical implementation strategies for AI-based instructional tools and technologies across primary, secondary, and higher education levels. Additionally, we seek to examine challenges, opportunities, and best practices in effectively preparing pre-service and in-service teachers for innovative STEM implementations, thereby contributing to sustained educational growth and development.

To gather further insights into innovative teaching and AI integration across STEM education contexts and practices, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Innovations in STEM education methodologies and pedagogies;
• Integration and impact of artificial intelligence in STEM teaching and learning;
• Technology-enhanced learning frameworks and applications in STEM;
• Emerging methodologies and approaches for studying STEM instructional practices;
• Implementation and evaluation of STEM education models in teacher training and educational research;
• Digital and online learning platforms enhancing STEM instructional practices;
• Educational strategies and programs aimed at enhancing pre-service teachers' STEM competencies;
• Sustainable and high-impact STEM education practices.

Out-of-the-box and interdisciplinary research approaches, theoretical insights, and empirical findings are highly encouraged. All methodological approaches—including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods—will be considered.
