About this Research Topic

Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 31 December 2025

  2. This Research Topic is currently accepting articles.

Background

The continuous consumption of fossil fuel has released large amounts of CO 2, resulting in serious environmental issues. Developing carbon efficient technologies for clean energy production and CO 2 utilization has attracted increasing interest. Photocatalysis and electrocatalysis are promising technologies to produce hydrogen and convert CO 2 into useful fuels in a sustainable way, which have been regarded as appealing approaches to mitigate resource extraction and lower the carbon footprint. During the reaction process, the adsorption behavior of reactants/products on the catalysts, charge migration and mass transport efficiency are highly important for the catalytic performance. Rational design of catalysts can effectively optimize the above issues to realize excellent activity.

After years of development, different kinds of photo/electrocatalysts have been developed and great progress has been achieved in this field. This themed topic intends to showcase the cutting-edge research, advancements and innovations in such carbon efficient technologies for hydrogen production and CO 2 utilization to uncover new possibilities and opportunities. We believe that this theme topic would be of great interest to researchers in different fields including chemistry, material, catalysis, environment and so on.

We welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on the themes including, but not limited to:

• Novel photo/electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and CO 2 conversion;
• Coupling systems between organics conversion and hydrogen evolution or CO 2 conversion;
• Advanced devices design;
• In-depth mechanism study;
