Background

The majority of the energy produced worldwide is based on fossil fuels, which have several negative impacts on the environment and contribute to global warming. The current political situation, together with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change has led to the need to replace fossil fuels with other energy sources. In this context, the use of renewable energy sources is growing exponentially. Renewable energy conversion typically uses clean technologies suitable for integration into sustainable systems.

On the transition path towards Renewable Energy Systems (RES), there are several challenges to increasing their energy performance, such as the development of wind systems by integrating high-speed increasers or counter-rotating rotors, the implementation of tracked photovoltaic systems, and their optimal control.

The goal of this Research Topic is to explore the impact of factors that influence the RES behavior aiming to optimize and increase the energy performance of renewable energy systems, for their affordable development at different scales. Computer-based RES modeling and simulation, along with experimental validation, are valuable approaches to identifying properties and developing innovative RES solutions.

This Research Topic focuses on the latest research in the field of modeling, simulation, optimization, and increasing performances of innovative solutions for affordable, sustainable, and environment-friendly wind and solar technologies for the built environment. The proposed topics include, but are not limited to:
