This study explores the impact of parenting styles and physical activity on adolescents' psychological resilience and their emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs). Previous research has established the significance of parenting in children's psychological well-being, but the mechanisms through which parenting styles affect EBPs via resilience remain underexplored. The study sampled 503 participants from schools in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China, using multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and the EMBU Short Form. Analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Pearson correlation analysis. The analysis identified significant mediation pathways. The pathway from parenting styles to physical activity and subsequently to EBPs had an effect size of 0.5443 (95% CI: 0.4600, 0.6287). Another pathway demonstrated that parenting styles influenced EBPs via psychological resilience, with an effect size of 0.0343 (95% CI: 0.0028, 0.0685). The combined mediation pathway, which included parenting styles, physical activity, and psychological resilience, showed an effect size of 0.0750 (95% CI: 0.0062, 0.1450). The results indicate that positive parenting styles boost both physical activity and psychological resilience, leading to a reduction in EBPs among adolescents. This study underscores the crucial role of positive parenting in enhancing psychological resilience and reducing EBPs in adolescents. The findings offer crucial insights for future interventions focused on enhancing adolescent well-being through targeted parenting practices.
