Effect of Big Five Personality Dimensions on the Academic Performance of University Students

Personality plays a vital role in the behaviour of college students and the personality traits affects the academic performance, placement, and sustainability in their career, peers and family relationships. The present research is conducted to explore the effects of the Big Five Personality Dimensions on student's academic performance, i.e. Grade point average (GPA) of a semester in higher level educational institutions. Purposive sampling method was used in this study to analyse 384 volunteered students, consisting of 220 males and 164 females, respectively belonging to age groups between 16 and 21 years and they come from different family status (joint and nuclear). The data collected was analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package of Social Science) in terms of GPA (<7 and >7) and the Big five personality dimensions. Students with the conscientiousness personality factor showed a much greater difference as compared to students belonging to other personality factors like openness, agreeableness, extroversion, and neuroticism. The students have almost similar results in the personality dimensions of openness, extroversion, and agreeableness, whereas a discrepancy was noted in terms of neuroticism and a greater part with conscientiousness among the students
