School bullying and depression in Chinese primary and secondary school students after the COVID-19: Mediating effect of academic anxiety and moderating effect of home-school cooperation

A survey was conducted on 3600 Chinese primary and secondary school students using the Depression Scale, School Bullying Scale, Academic Anxiety Scale, and Home-School Cooperation Scale. There are 3341 students selected as the research subjects to explore the mediating and regulatory mechanisms of academic anxiety and home-school cooperation in the relation between school bullying and depression. The results showed that school bullying, depression, and academic anxiety were significantly correlated with home-school cooperation.School bullying and academic anxiety were significantly correlated with each other and depression. School bullying could significantly and positively predict depression. Academic anxiety played a significant mediating role between school bullying and depression. Home-school cooperation played as a significant moderator in the relation between school bullying and academic anxiety, as well as in the relation between academic anxiety and depression. The findings showed that school bullying not only directly exacerbated depression but also indirectly increased depression levels by increasing academic anxiety. Home-school cooperation could buffer the effects of school bullying on academic anxiety and depression.
