Enhancing Generosity Through Movement:Association Between Physical Exercise and Charitable Donation Behavior

This study investigates the relationship between physical exercise and charitable donation behavior and explores potential mechanisms using data from the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS2012). The results suggest that participation in physical exercise is positively associated with individuals' involvement in charitable donations and the amount donated. Robustness checks, including propensity score matching, alternative dependent variables, and different regression models, support the consistency of these findings. Heterogeneity analysis shows no significant variation in the relationship across gender, age, and household registration. From the perspectives of altruism and reciprocity as motivations for charitable behavior, the study examines the mediating roles of social responsibility and subjective well-being. The findings support the idea that promoting mass sports may help foster broader participation in charitable activities, thereby aligning with efforts to advance common prosperity in China.
