This study examines how language teachers in Turkey form personal and professional relationships with literature and how these affect their teaching goals and practices. Using qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with 30 middle school teachers in Erzurum, the study applied content analysis to interpret their views. Results show that personal reading experiences, perceptions of literary competence, and cultural orientation shape teachers' use of literature as a teaching tool. Most teachers agreed that literary texts enhance students' language skills, critical thinking, and creativity, while challenges included selecting suitable texts, limited time, and varying student readiness. The findings also indicate that teachers' cultural backgrounds and personal values strongly influence their text choices and pedagogical orientations. Overall, the study highlights the role of literature in fostering cognitive and cultural development, and recommends that teacher training encourage regular reading habits and systematic approaches to strengthen literary competence.
