Background

In the field of neurological research, the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) represents a critical focal point for understanding how substances enter the brain and how this barrier can be manipulated for therapeutic purposes. Recent advancements have seen an increase in methods capable of altering the BBB’s permeability, which are vital for delivering pharmaceutical treatments directly to targeted regions deep inside the brain, especially for conditions like glioblastoma. Despite progress, there remains a significant gap in standardized, quantifiable methods for tracing these changes over time and their impacts on the brain, especially in response to both pathological and intervention-driven changes. Attention to quantified BBB permeability dynamics could accelerate development of effective interventions.

This Research Topic aims to collate extensive research focusing on quantifiable changes in BBB permeability, specifically including time windows for "open" and "close," and their implications for developing neurological interventions. The goal is to gather comprehensive data on the mechanisms that "open" and "close" the BBB, employing a range of interventions from pharmaceuticals to technologically driven methods like focused ultrasound. Research should provide detailed, measurable outcomes that demonstrate how these interventions influence BBB dynamics and subsequent neurological health.

To gather further insights into the dynamic nature of BBB permeability, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Novel techniques for quantifying BBB opening and closure during various interventions.
• Impact of neurological disorders, immune responses, and physiological changes on BBB permeability.
• Advanced imaging and molecular assessments used to monitor BBB state changes.
• The effectiveness of pharmaceuticals and other treatments in altering BBB permeability for therapeutic advantage.
• Comparative studies of BBB manipulative techniques across different model systems, including in-vitro and in-vivo settings as well as organ-on-a-chip technologies.

Through detailed research contributions spanning from experimental investigations to comprehensive reviews, this topic seeks to enhance the understanding and manipulation of BBB permeability, paving the way for groundbreaking treatments in neurological health.
