Evolutionary Mechanisms of Social Learning and Cultural Diversity

The field of social learning and cultural evolution has been a subject of intense study, with a focus on understanding the mechanisms that drive the spread of adaptive behaviors and the acquisition of culture. There is a significant variation in social learning across societies, between individuals, and over developmental time, and the reasons for these differences remain unclear. Recent studies have presented evolutionary models suggesting that individual variation in social learning can emerge if the benefits of social learning are unpredictable. This unpredictability selects for flexible developmental programs that allow individuals to update their reliance on social learning based on previous experiences. However, there are gaps in understanding how this developmental flexibility impacts cultural diversity and the role of social learning in the acquisition of complex behaviors.

The primary goal of this research topic is to delve deeper into the evolutionary mechanisms that shape individual variation in social learning and its impact on cultural diversity. The research aims to answer specific questions such as why there are differences in social learning across societies and individuals, and how these differences influence the acquisition of complex behaviors. The research will also explore if unpredictability in the benefits of social learning selects for flexible developmental programs, and leads to individual variation in social learning.

To gather further insights into the evolutionary mechanisms of social learning and cultural evolution, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- The role of social learning in the acquisition of complex behaviors.
- The influence of social learning on the spread of adaptive behaviors across societies.
