Background

Recent advancements in water electrolyzer technology have become a focal point in the quest for green hydrogen production. As the transition towards carbon neutrality gains momentum, green hydrogen emerges as a pivotal energy carrier capable of revolutionizing sectors such as transportation, industry, and power generation. Current technological gaps, including challenges in catalyst development, membrane materials, and system scalability, continue to impede the broader adoption of energy-efficient electrolyzers. Addressing issues related to the integration of renewable energy sources and the economic viability of these technologies is essential for accelerating the establishment of a sustainable hydrogen economy.

This Research Topic aims to explore the forefront of water electrolysis technologies, identifying innovative strategies to improve electrolyzer efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness. Central to this exploration are improvements in materials, such as reducing dependence on precious metals within electrolyzers, and developing advanced electrolyzer systems suited to dynamic operations and grid management. In addition, understanding the commercial and environmental impacts of these technological advancements through economic analyses and life cycle assessments remains a significant objective.

To gather further insights in the field of emerging water electrolysis solutions, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

o Breakthroughs in electrolyzer efficiency and durability

o Catalyst and membrane material enhancements

o Strategies for integrating renewables with electrolyzer systems

o Economic analysis of sustainable hydrogen solutions

o Life cycle assessments of electrolyzer technologies
